Art of Pasta wins Cover of the Year.

LEARNING how to use the tools of the trade is being taken to heart by Australia’s book designers.

Strong production values featured among the winners of the Australian Publishers Association’s 60th annual Book Design Awards at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on May 17.

The cover of the year went to designer Daniel New’s The Art of Pasta (Penguin), a recipe book by Lucio Galletto and David Dale, which combines a photograph of pasta with a black and white illustration of a pasta machine.

The subtle and elegant design instantly evokes the feeling of the restaurant,” the judges said.

One judge, Deborah Brash, creative director at Murdoch Books, said designers were showing greater knowledge of production instead of just working with type and designing on a page.

”They are working more with different paper stocks and have more knowledge about the printing and binding processes,” she said.

More than 400 books entered the awards, which included 17 categories.
