Lucio’s OnlineView our daily specials and so much more… Classic Ligurian DishBroad beans are at their very best right now and we invite you to eat them Ligurian style as a perfect entree. Typically with an Italian recipe, the quantities are not specified. They say q.b. “quanto basta” which means as much as you need. See image above. We recommend at least 1 kilo of fresh broad beans (unpodded) for 4-6 people. You will also need some fresh young pecorino cut about 0.5cm thick, a good extra virgin olive oil and some sea salt. Double peel the broad beans by first removing them from the pod, and then slipping the pale green outer shell off to reveal the tender, bright green bean inside. It is a somewhat laborious job but well worth the effort and it gets much easier with practice! Hint: Slit the top with your nail and squeeze the bean out from the bottom! Please do not blanch the podded beans – it does make the second peeling a little bit easier but you lose so much of that wonderful raw taste that makes this dish what it is. Once peeled, just just assemble the cheese and broad beans on a plate, dress with a little extra virgin olive oil & sea salt, add some crusty bread and… Buon Appetito!

Your Cellar at Lucio’s
Drink the wine you’ve been treasuring in a restaurant that will cherish it. You might need a few Saturday visits to get to them all. See the comprehensive Visit Paddington website for many more ideas on what to see in our charming village. Neighbourhood Community Garden
The little garden in the cul de sac just outside Lucio’s is coming along beautifully. So many afternoons we can hear the excited squeals of young children as they discover with such delight how their very own garden has grown. Congratulations to our industrious neighbours for bringing a once, little used space back to such vibrant life and engendering such great community spirit. Lucio and the Art
This month we were saddened by the loss of one of our dear long time friends, well known art critic, Robert Hughes. In 1963, long before Lucio thought of coming to Australia, and long before Robert thought of becoming an art critic, this now famous calendar photograph was taken on the balcony of our Windsor Street building, which, at the time, was known as the Hungry Horse Art Gallery & Restaurant. The original artists on the balcony were, left to right, Frank Hodgkinson (who died in 2001); Stanislaus Rapotec (1997); Charles Reddington; William Rose (1997); Carl Plate (1977); Colin Lanceley; John Olsen; Leonard Hessing (2004); Robert Klippel (2001); John Coburn (2006); Robert Hughes (2012); and Emanuel Raft. In serendipitous happenstance, during our nearly 30 years here, we are honoured that all but one of these artists has dined at Lucio’s, be it frequently or infrequently, and many of their works hang on our walls. Sadly Carl Plate passed away prior to our opening here. Lucio hosted a memorial lunch here on 25th September for some of Robert’s closest family and friends (including three of the balcony artists), at which he showed the guests one of Robert’s earliest artworks – given to Lucio many years ago (and which we were specifically asked not to hang). It was a rare piece painted before Colin Lanceley convinced Robert to forego the easel and paints and to dedicate his life to writing. He was a great man, a good friend and he will be missed. |
